‘Wake Me Up’ is the first solo single from Es May – the musical moniker of Malin Strandberg, a unique and complex singer/songwriter from the mountainous surroundings of Hemsedal, Norway.
Whether listening to one of her tracks or watching her perform, it isn’t hard to see why the heartfelt singer describes music as “the soul of life itself.” Fusing a soulful voice with a hint of vulnerability, captivatingly honest lyrics, and intriguing pop-arrangements, Es May cites some of her biggest influences as Florence + The Machine and fellow Scandinavian, Robyn.
Es May’s deeply personal songwriting style is evident on ‘Wake Me Up’ – a song about her struggles of being in an abusive relationship.
“It’s always hard to get out of something even though you know it’s unhealthy. Love can be so beautiful, but it can also inflict so much pain.”
2017 is set to be a breakout year for Es May following on from the second-half of last year. The summer of 2016 saw her release the tropical house single ‘Hold On’ with DJ/producer, Stisema. A debut single for both artists, the track quickly gained the attention of the blogosphere and whipped up a frenzy on dancefloors, climbing to the #1 position on Spotify’s ‘Norway Viral 50’ chart. The song also received airplay on KISS FM and P3 in Norway while spawning countless remixes. The track now has over 3 million combined streams!
